Don’t say: “You look a lot better now.” or “You look different.”
Do say: “As usual, you look [adjectvie], how do you feel nowadays?”I hate it when people all of sudden say you look a certain way after losing weight or after they realize who is trying to lose weight. Like it yes it is nice that people notice changes but they are ways to speak about it. You just simply reconstruct your sentence to something a lot less offensive or judgmental; in my opinion. A simple, “how you feel nowaday?” does wonders.
Don’t say: What’s your secret?
Do say: I’m so proud of you and what you’ve done.First of all the so-called secret is consistency. Second of all, it is not a secret. Third of all, everyone’s journey is different so what works for someone might not work for you and what works for you might not work for someone else. However, instead of a question try starting an open-ended conversation.
Don’t say: See, isn’t it better to be healthier?
Do say: What are some of the benefits you have received?Being healthy doesn’t necessarily mean life is better. Life is not necessarily determined by being unhealthy and healthy. It is determined by soooooo many other things collectively. So acknowledging this and making a conversation about how do you feel? and let the person explain the situations that they have benefited. These are another 3 of the main comments that I can think of at the moment of the top of my head. Just like before: For everyone who is trying to lose weight: I just want to let you know that no matter what people say, at the end of the day you need to take care of yourself. If that means doing things a little differently or listening to a random idea or eating that chocolate bar then do it. You do you boo. For everyone who is giving advice: Please, please, please, please, please, pleeeease do not offer advice that is not asked for. Although you are trying to help and you are coming from a good place, you may actually do more damage than good. If you missed out on part 1 of this particular blog post you can have a read of it here Disclaimer: Under no circumstances am I a professional so if you do start to workout or a food plan make sure to consult with a professional before starting. You are perfect the way you are and in writing this series I am not trying to say that everyone needs to work out or be on a food plan. The final say really comes down to your health, needs, wants and most importantly you. If you don’t what to workout or go on a food plan then don’t; as long as your doctor or nutritionist clears you.
